Microsoft Alliance to Enhance Apple Java Strategy

Last August at MACWORLD Expo/Boston, Apple announced a partnership with Microsoft that includes a commitment to collaborate on technology to ensure compatibility between their respective Virtual Machines for Java. Since that announcement was made, there has been much speculation on how this agreement might affect Apple's Java strategy. According to Will Iverson, Java product manager at Apple, the agreement enlarges Apple's Java strategy but does not change its direction. Here is the text of a brief interview with Iverson:

Mac OS Garners Praise as Best Java Development Platform

In late 1996, Apple stated its goals for its Java strategy, one of which was (and still is) to ensure that the Mac OS is the best platform for developing Java products. The comments of one Java developer, Dave Makower (coauthor of Java Programming Basics), imply that Apple has achieved that goal.

In the September 1997 issue of JavaWorld (an online magazine published by IDE), Makower wrote, "Roaster and CodeWarrior in particular are true high-quality IDEs [integrated development environments]. Nothing available on the PC or UNIX platforms compares to either of these in terms of ease of use." Later, he talked about showing Mac OS Java to his coworkers (who use Linux, Windows 95, Windows NT, and Solaris): "The other day, we did a code walk-through, and they were amazed at how far the Mac user interface goes toward speeding the process of navigating through code."

These quotes come from the article "Four Mac-based IDEs Compared: Which Should You Choose?", which analyzes "the pros (great UI, ease of use) and cons (no JDK 1.1) of the Mac as a Java development platform." The issue also contains three informative articles on Java Beans, the Java component-software technology, so the issue is well worth checking out:

WEB-BYTES--Pointers to More News and Software

Good News From Apple

The title says it all: "Mac OS 8 Off the Charts." According to an article in The Business Journal of San Jose dated August 25, Apple's "blockbuster release, Mac OS 8, is a hit." The article stated that the ComputerWare chain of stores reported selling "an average of one package a minute during the software's premiere weekend, July 26 and 27," and that "Mac OS 8 continues to be a best-seller [at ComputerWare] four weeks later." You can find this article on the web: Here's more good news: Charles Kuttner reported to the EvangeList mailing list that the readers of Consumer Reports magazine recently gave Apple top ratings in the "high overall ratings" and "service" categories of a questionnaire. This was reported in the September 1997 issue's review of computers for home offices. Unfortunately, this article is not available on an Internet site. (Consumer Reports has a presence on America Online, and the article may be posted there.)
